What Should I Do If My FASTag Balance Transfer Fails

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system. It is a prepaid account where you have to first deposit money from your linked bank account or prepaid wallet. Later, when passing through highways, this amount is automatically deducted.

Due to this prepaid nature, sometimes you need to transfer the FASTag account balance back to your original source of payment. This is usually done by submitting a transfer request using your issuer bank or NBFC’s website or mobile app.

Now, some cases have been observed where making such transfers become unsuccessful. Even after waiting for the usual 7-10 days, your FASTag account balance does not get transferred to your linked bank account.

Are you also facing such a situation? In this article, let’s check out some common reasons why this happens and what you can do.

Why does FASTag balance transfer fail

Below are some common reasons for transfer failure:

1. Insufficient wallet balance

Your FASTag wallet needs to have enough balance for transfers to succeed. If the balance is low or insufficient, the transfer may fail.

2. Incorrect details

While initiating a transfer, you are required to fill in important bank details. Unintentionally, if you have provided the wrong bank account number or IFSC, it can lead to rejections. This happens because the system cannot match the details.

3. Technical glitches

Sometimes there are technical issues at your bank’s or FASTag issuer’s end, such as:

  • Server problems
  • System updates
  • System downtime
  • Malware attack

During such times, their system blocks transactions temporarily which leads to transfer failure.

4. Multiple FASTags linked to one vehicle

If several FASTags are linked to the same vehicle, the system faces conflicts in processing the transaction.

5. Transfer restrictions

Be aware that wallet-to-wallet transfers between FASTag accounts are not allowed. As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the credit balance transfer feature is not available for the FASTag products.

Therefore, if you have made a transfer request to move money from one FASTag account to another, it will lead to transfer failure.

What should you do to resolve transfer failures

Generally, the transfer of your FASTag account is completed in about 7-10 days. If you still have not received your money back, follow these recommendations:

1. Check transfer details

To start with, verify all the information you provided while requesting a transfer, such as:

  • Bank account number
  • IFSC
  • Registered mobile number
  • FASTag account details

Be aware that errors in these details can cause failures. If you realise some mistakes have been made, contact the customer care portal and request the team to update the correct information.

2. Re-check your FASTag account balance

Ensure your FASTag account has enough balance. It is possible that there may be some deductions after placing your transfer request. In case your account balance has fallen below the requested amount, the transfer request will not be fulfilled.

3. Reach out to customer support

Ideally, you should contact your FASTag provider immediately through their helpline, customer portal, or email. Explain the issue clearly so that they can guide you. Try to gain a detailed explanation for the failure.

Escalate the issue or file a fresh transfer request

In case nothing is working, you can escalate your issue by visiting a branch or contacting higher authorities in customer service. Alternatively, you can file a fresh transfer request.

Once the amount is credited to your account and your previous FASTag becomes deactivated, you have to again apply for a new FASTag. Please note that as per the latest rules, owning and fixing a FASTag on your vehicle is mandatory. Otherwise, you will be required to pay double the toll amount.

After receiving your new sticker, properly paste it on the windshield of your vehicle near the rearview mirror. In case you need adhesives or cleaning cloth, visit the online marketplaces or physical stores.

Conclusion

FASTag balance transfer failures can happen due to various reasons like:

  • Insufficient wallet balance
  • Incorrect details
  • Technical glitches

In case the FASTag balance is not credited to your bank account within 7-10 days, you should first verify the transfer details and ensure your account has enough balance. Still, if nothing works, contact your FASTag issuer’s customer support for assistance or file a fresh transfer request.
